How betting bonuses and wagering requirements work

Betting bonuses can add real value, but only if you understand the conditions attached. The single most important term is the wagering requirement — how many times you must stake a bonus before you can withdraw anything from it.

Common bonus types

  • Welcome bonus — matched percentage of your first deposit, up to a cap.
  • Free bet — a risk-free stake; winnings usually exclude the stake.
  • No-deposit bonus — small reward just for registering, with strict terms.
  • Reload / cashback — loyalty offers for existing customers.

How wagering requirements work

If a bonus of 100 has a 5x wagering requirement, you must place 500 in qualifying bets before the bonus (and its winnings) can be withdrawn. A game-contribution rule can change this: if a market only counts 50% toward wagering, you need twice the turnover. Use our bonus wagering calculator to model it.

Terms that decide real value

  • Minimum odds — bets below a set price often do not count.
  • Time limit — bonuses expire, sometimes within days.
  • Maximum cash-out — common on no-deposit offers.
  • Eligible markets — some sports or bet types are excluded.

Is a bonus worth it?

A smaller bonus with low wagering and fair minimum odds usually beats a huge one you cannot realistically clear. Specific amounts and codes vary by operator — always read the current terms before opting in. 18+ only; gamble responsibly.
